What Remains is a joint exhibition of my work with the hand-crafted wooden vessels by local artist Don Scott at the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara. 30% of sales will be donated to the Architectural Foundation to benefit their work in our community.
My new body of work in What Remains explores personal themes of transition. Many of the paintings have a sense of movement, either through a domestic passageway or the movement of the eye through a composition. I found interiors to be a helpful symbol of moving from singleness to marriage and the associated changes of occupation, identity, and home. At the same time, my family has been navigating my grandmother’s dementia and what a relationship looks like with her in this new reality. While an interior painting could serve as a setting for my old memories of her, I felt the need to move from interior to exterior scenes for the mystery of this shift. Open landscapes and birds, as symbols of hope and a connection between heaven and earth, carry us through.
