Simple forms and subject matter command a sense of stillness; if we pause long enough, even an ordinary house rewards us with sincere beauty. My work seeks to invite an attitude of reverence for familiar spaces and the solace they provide. By using images from my childhood home enveloped in early morning darkness, a feeling of simultaneous comfort and longing emerges. Half-open doors might suggest the presence of another, and although the rooms are empty, they are not lonely.
The warmth of the brown walls contrasts with the cool blue light of the early morning, and the light promises that someone will be waiting for us around the corner to welcome us home. When we take time to embrace the stillness, perhaps our longing for God’s presence may be fulfilled in the spaces we least expect it.
